JER — almost 40 years after a period, between 1985 and 1992, in which he designed more than 20 book covers for various publishers (CEJ, Gradiva, Contra-Regra, Vega, Afrontamento) — returned to designing a book cover (with the digital collaboration of Rosa Quitério).
This time for the novel O Gato das Frases Lapidares (The Cat of the Lapidary Phrases) by Belino Costa — his friend and client of more than 40 years — published in 2026 by the Primeiro Capítulo imprint of Atlantic Books. As illustrations, JER used some drawings of his own from the 80s (the landscapes) and 90s (the cats).
Synopsis of the novel:
In Fonte Santa, an isolated and decaying town, the fear of the Covid-19 pandemic takes hold.
From this fear emerges the candidate of the new Anti-System Party for the Parish Council, leading the people to dream of a five-spout fountain. There is opposition. Others, inspired by the cat’s phrase, make words their banner, valuing their importance and meaning. After improbable journeys, inflamed passions, and existential battles, they experience unexpected hours of media exposure.
They will be famous for a few hours. With humor and irony, The Cat of the Lapidary Phrases reflects on decadence, faith, identity, politics, and catchphrases.
